About

I’m Syam Indra Pratama, an Indonesian journalist and independent editorial builder. I started working in journalism in 2010. Over the years, my work has moved beyond reporting stories to building the publications and editorial projects that carry them. In 2015, I founded BBCOM, a local digital publication in South Kalimantan. What began as a local news publication grew into a long-running record of the region, with more than 8 million web pageviews and thousands of published stories. In 2020, I started Hudes, an independent magazine focused on manual coffee. Through Hudes, I began working with people and stories from around the world, eventually documenting and interviewing people across more than 40 countries. I later built DHOUGH around dough culture, exploring how independent publications can grow around specific subjects and communities. Today, I am also building Berdjeda Institute, an editorial project centered on Story Conservation Journalism, documenting stories and knowledge about human life that might otherwise disappear. Across these projects, the subjects have changed. The work has not. I build editorial properties from scratch. Shaping their ideas, identities, editorial direction, publishing systems, and the stories they choose to carry. I’m interested in publications that have a reason to exist.
